Essaouira: A sunny week in the windy city

Every week with METEO CONSULT we offer you a destination to explore for a few days. This week we're heading to Morocco! The coast benefits from a sunny and temperate climate and stays cool due to the sea winds. While the sun shines, the air can stay cool, providing the perfect atmosphere for invigorating sightseeing and water sports enthusiasts.

Discover Essaouira: the pearl of the Atlantic

Essaouira, a seaside resort on the Atlantic Ocean, means "well-designed" in Arabic and is considered one of Morocco's most beautiful coastal towns. Like many Moroccan towns, Essaouira is divided into two parts: the historic old town with its lively markets and ancient mosques, and the new town, where Western influences are more evident.

Essaouira was famous for its port, which was the largest in Morocco in the 19th century, and served as a junction between Central Africa and the Kingdom of Sharifa. You will have an exotic experience as you stroll through the Old Port. Another highlight are the city walls, which were built in the 18th century by order of Sultan Muhammad bin Abdullah and built in 1764 by the French architect Théodore Cournot to fortify the city.

Dry and windy climate

Essaouira has a semi-arid climate with little rainfall and temperatures tempered by sea breezes. Known as the Windy City, this is a paradise for sailing, windsurfing and windsurfing. May is ideal for visiting Essaouira as temperatures are pleasant thanks to the constant winds that keep the temperature at a comfortable level.

Weather in Essaouira in May

Rain is rare in May and the sun shines generously. Temperatures vary slightly between morning and afternoon, averaging 15°C at dawn and 20°C in the afternoon. The sometimes strong north wind brings fresh air. Consider bringing a jacket for cooler evenings. If you plan on swimming, note that the water temperature in the Atlantic Ocean does not exceed 18 degrees Celsius due to cold currents. Indoors, temperatures are often 10°C higher, reaching significant heat levels.

Sunny but cold week

Essaouira promises a sunny week with moderate winds, ideal for walking. Temperatures range between 16 and 17 degrees Celsius at night, 20 and 23 degrees Celsius during the day, reaching a heat sensation of 24 to 25 degrees Celsius thanks to the sun. The evenings remain cool. The sunset, often misty, heralds sea depths that should not affect the coast but generate waves suitable for surfing, although some beaches can be dangerous.

Precautions to be taken

To fully enjoy your stay, choose sandy beaches for swimming, although water temperatures range between 17 and 18 degrees Celsius, which is warmer than in France. Beware of a high UV index of around 8 to 9, which requires adequate sun protection.

Whether you are a passionate water sports enthusiast or a lover of cultural discoveries, discover Essaouira, the city where wind and sun offer a unique experience.
